Cold wave in southern Florida: tips to stay safe

MIAMI, Fla. – Dangers lie in wait as South Floridians try to stay warm during sudden cold snaps like the one expected this weekend, says Miami Fire Lt. Pete Sanchez.

For space heaters, don't use an extension cord or surge protector. Sanchez says they must be plugged directly into an electrical outlet. They should also be kept on the floor, away from water, off furniture, and a meter away from anything flammable like curtains, pillows, or bedding.

“You also have to be careful with children and pets,” he said. "They can trip over it and get burned."

Sánchez says you should never try to heat your house with the oven or stove.

You should also consider furry members of your family.

“If it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pets,” said Flora Beal of Miami-Dade Animal Control. "So you want to make sure you get them inside and make sure they have plenty of blankets."

She also notes: “When you go to start your car, remember that many cats and small animals will get into the engine because they are trying to stay warm in this cold. … So when you go to start the car, bang on the hood or honk the horn to make sure that any small animals, kittens, that may have gotten into the engine get out before you start it.”
