The childhood vaccination campaign against covid starts this Wednesday, December 15, with children from 5 to 11 years old. The Public Health Commission and the autonomous communities have validated the start of inoculation for more than 3.2 million children in that age group.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands will carry out the vaccination of almost 137,000 children between 5 and 11 years of age in the autonomous community in the vaccination centers and health centers of the region. Vaccination of immunosuppressed children will be prioritised, and as has been happening with the vaccination of adults with this type of pathology, they will be summoned to their reference hospitals. In total, this Monday the first 54,000 doses will arrive on the islands.

Initially, the campaign will not be developed in educational centers in order to avoid the "brakes" that could occur in non-teaching periods, such as the upcoming Christmas holidays. However, it is not ruled out that in January and, depending on how the process evolves, it will be vaccinated in schools, according to sources from the Ministry.

As they explained, each of the eight islands has its reality and the decisions "will be made" based on the needs. In some, such as La Gomera or El Hierro, vaccination centers will not be necessary due to the small number of children they have, but they are planned to be reactivated in others, such as Lanzarote or Fuerteventura, where they were dismantled after inoculating the adults.

Cantabria

The Cantabrian Health Service (SCS) will begin the vaccination campaign for 38,000 minors between the ages of 5 and 11 on December 15, according to the regional government. So far, the Ministry of Health has reported that the doses will be injected in some health centers, by self-appointment, in the afternoon and on weekends. Vaccination can be adapted to the circumstances that arise as the plan progresses.

Castile and Leon

Castilla y León will vaccinate approximately 100,000 children, between 5 and 11 years old, in mass centers. The schools have been ruled out due to the dispersion of the 1,300 existing Primary Education centers in the region, as well as due to the conservation, logistics and transfer of the doses, as reported by the Ministry of Education.

Castilla la Mancha

Estremadura

In Extremadura, vaccination will be done "preferably" in schools, although the region has small rural population centers that will probably use the primary care network. In this way, children under 11, 10 and 9 years of age could be the first to be called to vaccinate before the start of the Christmas holidays, while the rest of the ages and the second doses would be inoculated upon return from the holiday period.

This community, together with Castilla-La Mancha, La Rioja and Comunitat Valenciana, are the only ones that will inoculate minors in schools.

Galicia

The community plan will be to administer the vaccine in large venues and prioritize minors with previous pathologies. Once these have been immunized, the sera will be inoculated in order of age, starting with the oldest and on December 15, 16, 17 and 18.

From the Ministry of Health they have communicated that the appointments will be in the afternoon of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday throughout the day, to avoid suspending classes and that parents can accompany their children. The intention is to inject the first dose on the same Saturday.

The president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has announced that they do not vaccinate all children at the same time since there will not be enough doses: "If we had enough vaccines, we would vaccinate all of them now." The forecast of the Ministry of Health is to send some 60,000 doses to the community this coming week when the target population consists of more than 150,000.

The Rioja

La Rioja has announced that its vaccination plan will be carried out in educational centers. The parents of minors, who so wish, will sign the consent for the administration to apply the doses to their children.

Madrid

The Community of Madrid will begin the vaccination of minors between 5 and 12 years of age on the 15th in the network of public hospitals in the region and it will be done by age groups, as reported by the Ministry of Health.

The Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, has lamented that the region will receive some "150,000 fewer doses than it needs" to cover this age group, estimating that between 350,000 and 400,000 minors live in the region with ages between 5 and 11 years.

Murcia

Vaccination will take place at the massive vaccination points that the community already has. The Ministry of Health has informed that parents will be able to book an appointment and they will be assigned the place where they should go. Murcia will follow in the footsteps of other communities, such as Aragon or the Valencian Community, and will inoculate the doses in order of age, starting with the oldest.

Navarre

Vaccination of children between 5 and 11 years of age will begin on December 15, with the exception of Pamplona, ​​where the process will begin a day later. In the case of the Pamplona region, the vaccination point of the Seminar will be used, while in the rest of the community different points will be used, although in no case will it be carried out in the school environment.

Basque Country

In the autonomous community of Euskadi, the vaccination of children between 5 and 11 years of age will be carried out in health centers and hospitals, so the option of immunizing in schools has been ruled out. Next Tuesday, 60,000 doses of the vaccine will be received and, a day later, on December 15, the immunization process for this age group will begin.

The Basque Minister of Health, Gotzone Sagardui, has indicated that the new batch of vaccines will arrive at the beginning of January, while encouraging mothers and fathers to inoculate minors with the serum, since "the side effects are minimal".

Valencia

In the Valencian Community, vaccination of children between 12 and 5 years of age will also begin next Wednesday, December 15, two days after the Ministry of Health receives 150,000 pediatric doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

As announced by the Minister, Ana Barceló, the vaccination of minors will start in educational centers during school hours, in the mornings. The first will be the students of special education schools and later, the immunocompromised minors, who will be vaccinated by the health services of the hospitals in which they are treated. In this sense, Health announced that it will move vaccination teams, made up of health professionals, to Valencian educational centers and special education centers.
