Thirteen artistic perspectives on immigration

Born in Taegu, South Korea, in 1957.

“This work combines and transposes six national flags that, together, form a new transnational flag. They are layered alphabetically by country, including nations that are not recognized internationally, without hierarchy or political bias. The work arises from the video To Breathe – The Flags (To breathe: The flags), a commission of the International Olympic Committee for the London 2012 Summer Olympics, which represents the 246 flags of the participating nations dissolved in a continuous loop , with their iconic designs fused together.

I wanted to present flags as indistinguishable visual symbols that undergo cross-pollination, to hollow out and reconfigure their intended purpose—as symbols of sovereign states and nationality—in order to blur and transcend national borders. This work is an invitation to coexistence, to an ideal world in which individuals can come together to celebrate our differences and our common humanity.”
