Family buys clothes online, kilos of drugs arrive by mail

A couple from Austria bought clothes online , but received several drug shipments with more than 45,000 ecstasy pills inside the packages, local police reported through their social networks.

The couple, 59 and 59 years old, who did not want to reveal their identity, told the police that the packages were delivered to their home in the city of Linz, after buying several dresses on a website in the Netherlands.

The order came later from the city post office, but when the couple opened the packages, they not only found the clothes they had ordered online , but also bags of purple pills that they mistook for decorative stones.

The husband reviewed the contents and realized that they were narcotics, so he called the police, who estimated there were just under 25,000 ecstasy pills with a value of 550,000 dollars (11 million pesos).

Authorities investigate shipment of drugs over the internet

After giving notice to several justice institutions in Europe, the Scottish police and the National Crime Agency (NCA) reported that they arrested the person to whom the package was addressed, while the Dutch authorities continue to investigate the origin of the order.

The Netherlands is considered one of the largest producers of illegal drugs in the world and it is through the so-called Dark Web, where orders are placed for drugs that are sent from the Netherlands through letters and mail packages.

Police warned in a report that the Netherlands was beginning to resemble a narco-state with forces unable to combat the rise of organized crime and a parallel criminal economy.

The authorities reported that the amount of drugs such as ecstasy and amphetamines that are sent by post has tripled from 302 pounds in 2016 to more than 1,000 pounds in 2018, as reported by a British newspaper.
